Suzuki Academy
The WMS/DMS Suzuki Academy is based on the educational philosophy of Shinichi
Suzuki, applying the mother tongue approach to music study. Students learn to
play violin, viola, cello or flute as they would learn to speak language—by
listening and imitating—with the support of parents and teacher. Parents are
expected to attend lessons with children and assist with home study. In
addition to the weekly private lesson, mandatory group/theory classes meet
weekly, providing further reinforcement of techniques studied during the
private lessons and increasing students’ motivation and enjoyment.
Specific group assignments are determined by each student’s individual skills
and advancement through the Suzuki literature. Recitals are scheduled
throughout the year. All WMS/DMS Suzuki faculty have received Suzuki teacher
training and are registered through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Suzuki instruction is appropriate for children as young as age 2, depending on
the child’s development and the instrument. Very young children and their
parent/caregiver are interviewed prior to receiving an approval to begin formal
Suzuki studies. WMS/DMS Suzuki Academy instruction is available at the
Wilmington Branch and also on a limited basis at the school’s Pike Creek
location (see page 20).

Suzuki Academy Private Study____________
The private study lesson day/time is arranged through the Registrar and is
subject to instructor availability. Each student enrolled in Suzuki Academy
private study must participate in weekly group/theory classes. Student and
parent/caregiver attend weekly lessons that follow the school’s quarterly
lesson schedule.
Suzuki Group Classes____________
Each student enrolled in Suzuki Academy private study must participate in
weekly group/theory classes. Attendance is mandatory for all WMS/DMS
Suzuki Academy students and is considered an integral part of the Suzuki
method. Suzuki group classes alternate between repertoire classes and
theory/musicianship classes. Grouped by similar instrument and ability
level, students learn listening and social skills by interacting in the
group environment. Parents are expected to observe group classes. Advanced
Suzuki Academy students who qualify by audition may participate in Orchestral
Prep for Strings (Monday), Orchestral Prep for Suzuki Strings (Saturday), the
Delaware Youth Orchestra or the Delaware Youth Symphony in addition to
traditional Suzuki group classes at no additional cost. Orchestral Prep for
Suzuki Strings will be offered on Saturdays with the other Suzuki Academy
group classes.

This class/ensemble prepares string students for participation
in orchestra and chamber music by strengthening the skills
they have acquired from private lessons, group classes
and music theory. Activities will include rhythm exercises,
note-reading studies and tuning, along with listening studies,
playing in ensemble and discussing composers and specific
musical pieces. The class/ensemble helps to prepare the
student for Delaware Youth Orchestra. Students may
spend more than one year in the class/ensemble, depending
upon ability level and rate of advancement. Annually,
students will participate in a side-by-side orchestra concert
with the Delaware Youth Orchestra, with periodic additional
performance opportunities.
Prerequisite: Placement audition; consent of the instructor. |

the basics of the philosophy. This class is included in the
cost of the student’s tuition. It is open to interested parents
and teachers not registered in the Suzuki Academy at a
cost of $45. Please contact the Wilmington Branch Front
